Workshop: Intro to Programming with Python

YKMakers is pleased to announce their first workshop: Intro to Programming with Python. This workshop will be held on Saturday, January 16th from 4 pm to 10 pm. Cost of the workshop is $20 for non-members, or $10 for members. Please contact to reserve your seat. Edit (Jan 13th): We are now full! We'll run this one again in the future!

Python is a general purpose scripting and programming language that is widely taught and widely used. It is the most common language used to teach first year Computer Science courses in north american universities. In the Maker context, it is commonly used to program devices such as the Raspberry Pi, or script CAD programs. It is also commonly used for scientific programming, web programming, home automation, and prototyping code. This workshop will assume absolutely no programming experience. You should bring a laptop that you are able to install software onto. The agenda will be:

  • Installing python and an editor
  • Python as a desktop calculator
  • Running python programs
  • Objects and labels
  • Lists and containers
  • Conditional statements
  • Loops
  • Functions
  • Putting it all together (Turtle)

Much of the workshop will permit open ended exploration of the concepts, and is designed to give you the tools required for further exploration.

As this is our first public workshop, expect hiccups as we figure out things like planning, projectors, etc. This is an alcohol free event. Food is not included. Bring your own snacks and drinks. We will break shortly after 6:30 pm for a chance to microwave some food - or maybe order pizza.
